He appears first in his resurrected form to his follower Mary Magdalene. Then to the others. Telling them;
“All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
“Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”
“I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed in power from on high.”
“And with that he breathed on them and said, “receive the Holy Spirit.”
The resurrected Jesus appeared repeatedly to them, over a period of forty days, and performed more miracles in their sight, and sanctified Peter, who had denied him when he was arrested. Thankfully he’s good for second chances.
‘On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command:’ “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptised with water, but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.”
They wanted to know what happens next.
“Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
They still think it’s about getting rid of the Romans. They will soon learn.
“It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
After he had said this Jesus was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
And if that were the end of it, that would be the end of it.
If the Holy Spirit does not come, as Jesus stated he would, there will be no more to write.
The followers wait.
They replace the betrayer Judas with Mattias.
And they wait.
There is now only one remaining from the original five who received the Holy Spirit, back at the beginning of Jesus’ birth. Mary, mother of Jesus.
She’s the only one left.
And so they pray.
And they wait.
As Jesus instructed them to do.
He said to wait.
Until the Holy Spirit comes.
And then The Holy Spirit comes.
